Department of Design Students receive Numerous Awards

Friday, April 10, 2015

LAWRENCE — Over the past two months University of Kansas Department of Design students have received numerous honors at two different events, the National Student Show in Dallas and the Creative Summit in San Marcos, Texas.

This is the 11th year the Dallas Society of Visual Communication has hosted the National Student Show. This year jurors selected about 200 works for display from the 1,400 projects submitted. KU students created 50 of those selections and also took home first places for Best Portfolio in the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. Based on the strength of its students’ work, the same jury gave KU its Best School award for the fourth year in a row.

“We are thrilled to be named Best School by the judges again this year. Every year there is more pressure to stay on top,” said Associate Professor Andrea Herstowski, chair of the Design Department. “KU students take their education seriously, and it is terrific that their hard work and dedication is evident to professionals. Congratulations goes out to all the students and the visual communication faculty.”

The Creative Summit, an exhibition and conference put by Texas State University in San Marcos, is now in its 29th year. This year’s judges chose 100 projects from 2,300 submitted. Five KU students submitted work, and the jury selected 15 pieces for exhibition. These won 19 prizes, four of which were special Juror’s Choice awards.

Student Sydney Goldstein, Overland Park, received numerous awards in both competitions, including Best Senior Portfolio at the National Student Show. At the Creative Summit she won eight awards, more than any other student.

Her achievements in San Marcos inspired the jurors and organizers to create the Chicago Award. It will furnish Goldstein with a fellowship, transportation, housing and a stipend so she may work in Chicago for one month this summer.
