LAWRENCE ‚ Get Out The Vote Posters created by seven University of Kansas Department of Design students were recently selected for an exhibition at the American Institute for Graphic Arts National Design Center in New York City. Two students, Jing Jian, Olathe, and Alyssa Bastein, St. Louis, each have two posters on display.

More than 200 posters were submitted in the contest, open to professionals, and 50 were selected in the show.

The Get Out the Vote poster competition is part of the AIGA's nonpartisan Design for Democracy program, established in 1998. Its intent is to increase civic participation by making government more understandable and trustworthy.

Design for Democracy collaborates with researchers, designers and policymakers in the service of public-sector clients, and AIGA's goal of "demonstrating the value of design by doing valuable things."

"Our students researched the history and attitudes regarding voting in the U.S. In particular they looked at why people choose not to vote," said Patrick Dooley, professor in the design department. He gave the poster as a class assignment.

"Each student then fashioned an approach towards advocating voting for a particular demographic group, building their design around an appeal to that group to participate in the general election," he said.

Other Department of Design students in the exhibition are Eric Norton, Dodge City; Erin Zingré, Fort Scott; Jon Duong, Shawnee; Kelsey Allen, Wichita, and Emily Mullett, Leawood. Cat Coquillette, Kansas City, Mo., a 2010 Department of Design graduate, also has a poster in the exhibition.

The work will be on display through Nov. 30. The AIGA National Design Center is located at 164 Fifth Ave., Manhattan, N.Y.

The KU students' posters can be seen online.

The Department of Design is part of the KU School of Architecture, Design and Planning.
