Certificate in Participatory Design

The Participatory Design Graduate Certificate program will not be renewed after Spring 2024.

  • For current students who have already applied and started working on coursework related to the Participatory Design Graduate Certificate program, don’t worry, you can continue to take courses to complete the requirements of the program.
  • For students who may have not yet applied, but who you know to be pursuing coursework toward the certificate.  Please make sure that you apply in time for admission no later than Summer 2024.  No new students may be admitted after the last admit term of Summer 2024. The deadline for summer 24 is 6/3/24.

The Graduate Certificate of Participatory Design (formerly Public Interest Design) is designed to provide students with the essential professional knowledge and skills in a truly community-engaged design process. This Certificate is also open to students in Design, Urban Planning, Public Health and other disciplines. This program has ties to the Center for Service Learning where opportunities to participate in events, apply for service-learning mini grants for small project / research development, and volunteer to participate in service learning are available. The Certificate is available as a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) opportunity for outside professionals as well.

Total Credit Hours for Completion: 12 credits

Students may elect 12 hours of graduate-level credit from the courses listed below to satisfy specific curricular requirements for this certificate program. Students are required to take one ARCH 700 Directed Readings class in Participatory Design. Students in the professional M.Arch program may enroll in one of the Architecture Design Courses (ARCH 608 or ARCH 810) and complete the certificate requirements by taking one additional participatory design elective (ARCH 600 or another ARCH 700).  When signing up for the studio section, inquire with the contact below.

 

Required Course:

ARCH 700: Directed Readings in Participatory Design (3 credit hours) An introduction to participatory methods, theories and case study examples of participatory design

Additional Courses:

ARCH608 Urban Dwelling Studio (6 credits) or ARCH810 Public Interest Design Studio (6 credit hours) For Architecture Majors: each year, one or more of these listed design studios is approved as a designated participatory design studio. When signing up for the studio section, inquire with the program director to develop the reflective documentation required.

ARCH600 or ARCH 700 (3 credit hours) Each year, several community-engagement courses are offered through the architecture and design departments.
