Biography

Dr. Gustavo Do Amaral is an architect, researcher, and entrepreneur with expertise in architecture, urban design, and urban data science. He holds a Ph.D. and a Master's degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, in addition to degrees from the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás (PUC-GO) in Brazil. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas, where he serves as the Director of the Sports and Leisure Program. With over a decade of experience in architecture education, Dr. Do Amaral has taught a wide range of courses in design methodologies, urban planning, and technology integration at institutions in both Brazil and the United States.

Research

Dr. Do Amaral's research focuses on enhancing our understanding of the urban impact of sports-related architecture and urban design. He has developed analytical methodologies to measure the socioeconomic impacts of urban stadia by analyzing their connection to the street network and surrounding socioeconomic activity. Through the use of software that collects and analyzes data from location-based social networks, combined with graph theory and socioeconomic data, his research provides quantitative and qualitative insights into the relationship between stadia and the city on a global scale.

Recognition and Contributions

In 2015, Dr. Do Amaral was appointed a permanent member of the International Union of Architects (UIA) Sports and Leisure. He actively participates in the biannual UIA meetings in Germany and collaborates with industry partners on projects worldwide. As a Stadia and Arena Global Expert Committee member appointed by IAKS, Dr. Do Amaral has been invited to speak at prestigious events such as the Center for Urban Innovation at Georgia Tech in 2015, the International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) Congress in Germany and Argentina, and Georgia Tech's 2019 Digital Building Lab Industry meeting. His research on the use of Big Data for analyzing the urban impacts of stadia has been recognized by the Global Alliance of Technological Universities with the Cities of the Future fellowship in Germany in 2017.
