Architecture Lecture Series | Alex Ogata: “Impermanent: Architecture Event”

Alejandro “Alex” Ogata is a Peruvian-born architect and director of the Design Studio at the global design firm, Populous. As Studio director, he leads a team formed specifically to foster new ideas and push the boundaries of what is possible. A former Fulbright scholar and SOM Fellow; his work has been recognized through grants and awards from design organizations like Benetton’s Fabrica and Shinkenchiku-sha. Academically, he has lectured or taught at various universities including Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Howard, Stanford’s CIFE and UMKC’s Bloch business school. He lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri.

Arch 600: Daniel Libeskind and Late-Modern Architecture
What does it mean to lead an architectural life well? To examine this question, this 3-credit Arch 600 seminar offers an in-depth inquiry into the early life, creative practice, and architectural pedagogy of architect and educator Daniel Libeskind (1946-present).
Using this seminal figure as a lens into post-war North Atlantic architecture and its educational practices reveals complex questions that underpin each week’s themes. Through lectures, readings, videos, and discussions, students will explore not only Libeskind but also related architects and academics, works, and crucial ideas across different sites (profession, creative practice, and schools). This seminar aims to enrich the students’ knowledge of their discipline as well as enliven their self-understanding as emerging professionals. If you are interested, please enroll. Hart Howerton 2025 Travel Fellowship
The Hart Howerton Fellowship provides students with an opportunity to enrich their education with both travel, research and office experience. The program is accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or interior design who will be entering their final year of study in September 2025.
Award: $20,000 + travel expenses

Smith Group JEDI Scholarship
We created the SmithGroup Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) Scholarship Program to create a more diverse and inclusive design industry by providing students with opportunities to pursue their academic and professional goals.
Each year, we award five scholarships to students demonstrating a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the design industry. The scholarship includes a one-time award of $6,000 to offset the recipient’s tuition at their current academic institution. Additionally, scholarship recipients serve as paid summer interns at SmithGroup offices across the United States (internship is a program requirement).
Application Deadline: December 1st
