KU Core Courses M.Arch Students Need & How to Find Them

Note: M.Arch 2-year and 3-year students do not need to be concerned about the KU Core—this is an undergraduate requirement set and does not apply to your degree program. Interior Architecture students should see KU Core Courses IA Students Need & How to Find Them

M.Arch 5-year students must finish the KU Core within their first four years in order to be eligible for graduation with the Architectural Studies BA. Most KU Core goals are covered by Architecture degree requirements such as ENGL101 (Goal 2.1, Written Communication) or PHSX114 (Goal 3N, Natural Science). Others are covered by Architecture major-specific requirements such as ARCH540 (Goal 3H, Arts & Humanities) or ARCH552 (Goal 5, Social Responsibility & Ethics).

However, there are a few KU Core Goals that must be taken outside of degree requirements and outside the department. Typically they are Goal 2.2 (Oral Communication), Goal 3S (Social Science), and Goal 4.1, Human Diversity in the US.

The best way to search for a Core course is to use the Schedule of Classes

  1. Use the ‘Options’ menu to the right of the blue Search button

  1. On the left set of filters, select Any principal/KU Core course code

  1. Some of these are not labelled so you must be sure to select the correct Core course code

  1. You can search for GE22 (Oral Communication), GE3S (Social Science), AE41 (Human Diversity US)

Search Tips

We suggest adjusting the Course Number on the bottom left from 999 to 299 to filter for a more appropriate level of course

If the enrollment season has already begun, use the box on the right set of filters to indicate ‘Do not show full or unopened sections.’ This will save you time in your search process

Explore the filters in the Options area to determine other ways to fine-tune your search; you can search for specific days, times, etc.

When you find the class you want, you will have to take this information to your Enroll & Pay (Enroll & Manage Classes tile) to add the course to your schedule or to your shopping cart. Using the 5-digit class # rather than the course title in the keyword search box will save you time.

Caution: many students bring in AP, IB, or dual enrollment credit that will fulfill one or more of their KU Core Goals requirements. If you don’t know which KU Core Goal you are looking for, consult your Academic Advisor Laura Leonard!
