Architecture department offers three dual degree programs jointly with other departments:
Dual M.Arch/M.C.M Degree Program
The Master of Construction Management (MCM) and Master of Architecture dual degree program is designed for students intending to pursue a career in architecture, development, construction, and/or project management. Students completing the dual degree program earn an MCM from the KU School of Engineering and an M.Arch. degree from the KU School of Architecture and Design. Diplomas are awarded concurrently by each school at the conclusion of the joint degree program requirements.
The MCM program requires M.Arch students to complete 24 credit hours in the School of Engineering via the Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering (CEAE) Department. Prospective dual degree students must already be students in the Master of Architecture program and must apply and be accepted by the CEAE Department.
Dual M.Arch/MBA Degree Program
The Master of Business Administration/Master of Architecture dual degree program is designed for students intending to pursue a career in architecture, development, construction, and/or business. Students completing the dual degree program earn an MBA from the KU School of Business and an M.Arch. from the KU School of Architecture and Design. Diplomas are awarded concurrently by each school at the conclusion of the joint degree program requirements.
The MBA program requires M.Arch students to complete 32 credit hours in the School of Business. Prospective joint degree students must already be students in the Master of Architecture program and must apply and be accepted by the School of Business. New students must declare their intention to pursue the joint degree before completing the first year of the architecture curriculum. Typically, the MBA is completed during the final year of study. Dual M.Arch/ M.U.P Degree Program
Current KU Master of Architecture students are eligible to apply to the Master’s of Urban Planning (MUP) Program for a dual degree M.Arch and MUP. The dual degree combines a Master of Architecture with a Master of Urban Planning and is designed for students who have a passion for problem-solving and helping communities engage with their futures. It allows well-qualified students to earn two masters' degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning in six years, rather than the six or seven years it would take to earn each degree separately.
The dual degree requires M.Arch students to complete 42 credit hours in the MUP program with some courses prior to the last year of the MUP counting for both architecture and urban planning. Careful course selection and steady progression through M.Arch are necessary to ensure all requirements for both degrees may be completed within the 6-year time frame for MARCH students. All prospective students should discuss their interests with the professional advisor of the Department of Architecture and the Urban Planning program director as soon as possible. A meeting with the Urban Planning director should take place no later than the student’s Junior year (Year 3) to discuss possible admission to the MUP program for the dual degree.
General admission requirements and the content of each of these programs are discussed on their pages of the online catalog.
